spring 2008 5Hearts & Hammers relies on hundreds of dedicated volunteers each year to provide labor for its home improvement program. Local area businesses, professional associations and churches account for a majority of the teams that participate.

A typical Hearts & Hammers project will accommodate 30 to 50 volunteers making Program Day a team building and/or networking opportunity for all participants.

Do I need construction experience to be a volunteer?

No, Hearts & Hammers volunteers can have experience ranging from novice painter to experienced carpenters. Typical projects also include yard work and landscaping. All volunteers at any experience level are welcome.

When are the dates of the program?
Last Saturday in May or Saturday after Memorial Day

The 3rd Saturday in September.

What is the length of the program day and schedule of activities?

A typical program day starts at 8:00 AM for volunteers and concludes when the project is complete. Generally, about 6 to 8 hours.

What Items should I bring to the program day?

Hearts & Hammers provides all tools and materials required to paint and rehabilitate the house. However, personal items such as work gloves and protective eye wear are encouraged.

Are there age requirements to become a volunteer?

Yes, you must at least 12 years old to participate on program day. A parental permission form must be completed for ages 12 to 18.

What kind of work will Hearts & Hammers volunteers complete?

Home improvements are limited to exterior painting and repairs. They typically include painting, caulking, repair or replacement of windows and doors, ramp construction, repair or replacement of exterior light fixtures, landscaping, removal of debris and other services to restore the character of the home and to improve its weatherproofing and security. Hearts & Hammers does not provide any interior refurbishment, major electrical work or plumbing services.
