Where We Work
Hearts & Hammers serves homeowners, volunteers, and community partners in two primary regions: the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and Dallas-Fort Worth. Our work began in Dallas and later expanded to Minnesota, with both programs now operating as one nonprofit organization.
One Mission, Two Regions
1987 - Hearts & Hammers Founded in Dallas, Texas
Hearts & Hammers began in Dallas when Bob Walker and fellow returned Peace Corps volunteers organized to repair homes for people who could not afford the work themselves.
1997 - Minnesota Chapter Founded
After relocating to the Twin Cities, Walker established the Minnesota program. The first Twin Cities home was refurbished on August 23, 1997, in north Minneapolis.
2018 - Hearts & Hammers Brings Metro Paint-A-Thon Into the Organization
Hearts & Hammers integrated Metro Paint-A-Thon into its Twin Cities operations, carrying forward a program that had served low-income seniors and people with disabilities since 1984.
2022 - Dallas Program Reestablished
Hearts & Hammers restarted its Dallas program as part of the Minnesota-based organization, bringing the two regions under shared leadership and operations.
Today - One Hearts & Hammers
Hearts & Hammers now serves homeowners through programs in the Twin Cities and Dallas-Fort Worth, with a shared mission, staff leadership, and organizational structure.
