At Hearts & Hammers, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a safe, well-maintained home—especially those who have spent their lives working hard for their families, their communities, and their country. That’s why, for almost 30 years, we’ve been rolling up our sleeves, gathering volunteers, and making a difference—one house at a time.
If you’re new to our work, here’s what we do in a nutshell: Hearts & Hammers provides exterior home improvements for senior citizens, disabled individuals, and veterans in need—all at no cost to them. We bring together teams of dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and caring community partners to restore dignity and security to homes that have fallen into disrepair.
How We Make It Happen
We don’t do this alone. Our volunteers are the heart of our organization. We rely on a unique sponsorship and volunteer-driven model, powered by community organizations, church groups, and corporate sponsors like McGough, Mortenson, Marvin, Target, and Sherwin Williams. From painting and landscaping to repairing siding and building accessibility ramps, they show up ready to lend a hand and make a real impact. And trust us—there’s nothing quite like seeing the look of relief and gratitude on a homeowner’s face when they realize they don’t have to worry about their crumbling steps or peeling paint anymore.
But it’s not just about the work—it’s about the people. When volunteers and homeowners meet, connections are made, stories are shared, and communities grow stronger. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, and that’s what makes what we do so special.
Where We Work & Our Plans to Grow
Hearts & Hammers has been making an impact in both the Twin Cities metro area and the Dallas-Fort Worth region, helping homeowners maintain safe, well-kept homes. Our volunteers and partners have restored countless houses in both communities, ensuring that seniors, individuals with disabilities, and veterans can remain in the homes they love.
Recognizing the growing need beyond these urban centers, we launched a pilot program in Warroad, Minnesota in 2024, bringing our services to rural homeowners who often have fewer resources for critical home repairs. This program is just the beginning. We’re actively exploring ways to expand further into Greater Minnesota, partnering with local businesses, community groups, and volunteers to bring our mission to more small towns and rural communities across the state.
Why This Matters
Many of the homeowners we assist are on fixed incomes and simply can’t afford the repairs their homes desperately need. Others are physically unable to tackle the work themselves. Without help, these homes can become unsafe, leading to more significant issues down the road. That’s where Hearts & Hammers steps in—to ensure people can stay in the homes they love, with dignity and pride.
